Club Penguin bought for $700 million!
I knew this web game was popular and I thought it was neat (ToonTown Online is a hundreds time better). The big reason for its success is that
1) It was one of the first Flash online games for kids solely.
2) Other games like ToonTown require 3D hardware acceleration and aren’t pick and play – you have to sign in, go through a long training process and deal with hardcore RPG elements to level up.

The downfall of Club Penguin will be it’s the Flash limitations. The mini games are rather stupid and boring due to latency and poor design as constricted by Flash (can’t have too much action with dozens of penguibs around). The fun bits are socializing with others and silly dress up stores…. which hasn’t been emulated in another kid online game as of yet. Maybe Webkinz? Unfortunately, I haven’t played that…
