Advertiser funded gaming…
I’ll ask an open question: Do developers REALLY want their games to be advertiser funded like TV shows?
The end result to me is a loss of control. The advertisers want the least offensive + most marketable piece of entertainment out there (most eyeballs) with little concern for quality.
Look at the quality of HBO cable shows: Sopranos, Entourage, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Sex in the City, Deadwood, Six Feet Under…
Few of these shows would have been made by NBC/CBS/ABC due to censorship issues and advertisers. I feel developers see money and forget the reality of advertiser funded game development. As developers we need to find avenues that deal with the paying customer directly (Steam + PSN + XBLA + Yahoo) or paid subscription game channels (hoping GameTap becomes “it”).
