Michael Jackson sadly passed away this last week but was no stranger to video games. Apart from owning a huge amount he even appeared and had is own video games. Michael Jackson’s Moonwalker for the Arcade and Mega Drive/Genesis as well as appearances in Space Channel 5 and Ready 2 Rumble Boxing. But it’s Sonic 3 that gets talked about the most when mentioning Michael Jackson and video games in the same sentence.
For a long time it’s been rumoured that Michael Jackson helped to create the level music in Sonic 3. So why the rumour? Well apparently he did create the music but after his high profile case with Jordan Chandler, Sega understandably got a bit nervous and remove the music.
But did they? We dug up this youtube video that looks at Sonic 3’s Music in detail and compares it to a number of Michael Jackson tracks.
This video goes into even more detail, sadly it can’t be embed – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JbVM-l2Oku4
Very similar i think you’ll agree. But theres a bit more to this story. Maybe that music isn’t by Michael Jackson at all. Maybe it was created to sound similar to the music that MJ wrote without it actually being his work.
If you wish to know more then check out Sega-16’s huge write up on what they think, with interviews from the developers on Sonic 3 and a whole bunch more. Makes for interesting reading. – http://www.sega-16.com/feature_page.php?id=392&title=Sega%20Legends:%20Michael%20Jackson%20&%20Sonic%203
